Suction trailing hopper dredgers

A Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) is mainly used for dredging loose and soft soils such as sand, gravel, silt or clay. One or two suction tubes, equipped with a Drag Head, are lowered on the seabed, and the drag head is trailed over the bottom. A pump system sucks up a mixture of sand or soil and water, and discharges it in the `hopper` or hold of the vessel. Once fully loaded the vessel sails to the unloading site. The material can be deposited on the seabed through bottom doors, or reclaimed by using the `rainbowing` technique. The material can also be discharged through a floating pipeline to shore, and used for reclaiming land.

The dredging system of a TSHD typically consists of:

 The trailing suction installation for excavation and slurry creation. This part consists of a draghead, Suction Pipe and gantries, swell compensation and a degassing system.

Pumps for hydraulic transportation. The size, type, and number of pumps depends on the size of the vessel and specific operating requirements. For dredging at greater depths, hoppers can be equipped with an underwater pump integrated on the suction pipe.

A hopper for storing the soil during transportation.

Discharge installations for unloading the slurry. These consist of, for instance, bottom doors or conical bottom valves, a rainbow installation and Bow Coupling including floating discharge lines.

These components are connected within the system using pipes and valves.
